Finding hair on your pillow or comb can be worrying. But not every strand has fallen out from the root. Some have simply broken along their length. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right care.
Hair fall (shedding)
Shedding happens from the root. It is normal to lose some hair every day as part of the natural hair cycle. A shed hair is usually full length and may have a small white bulb at one end.
Hair breakage
Breakage happens when the hair shaft snaps. Broken hairs are often shorter and uneven, without a bulb. Breakage is commonly linked with dryness, heat styling, chemical treatments, rough combing and tight hairstyles.
How to reduce breakage
- Use a wide-tooth comb and detangle from the ends upward.
- Limit high heat and let hair air-dry when possible.
- Avoid very tight ponytails and buns.
- Nourish dry hair with a suitable serum or oil.
- Protect hair from sun and pollution.
When to seek advice
If you notice sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss, a widening part, or scalp redness, itching or pain, consult a doctor or dermatologist. Hair products can improve how hair looks and feels but cannot address every cause of hair loss.
