Our hands are washed, sanitized and exposed to the elements more than any other part of the body. No wonder they are often the first place we notice dryness.
Why hands get dry
- Frequent handwashing, especially with hot water
- Alcohol-based sanitizers
- Detergents and household cleaners
- Cold, dry or air-conditioned air
- Sun exposure
A simple hand-care routine
- Wash with lukewarm, not hot, water and a gentle cleanser.
- Pat dry — don’t rub.
- Apply hand cream while skin is still slightly damp.
- Reapply after sanitizing and chores.
- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
- Apply a little more at bedtime.
When to see a doctor
If your hands are cracked and bleeding, itchy with a rash, or not improving with regular moisturising, see a doctor or dermatologist. Some skin conditions need specific treatment.
