Most of us notice some stiffness now and then — getting up after a long drive, first thing in the morning, or the day after unusual activity. Everyday stiffness is common, and simple habits can support comfort.
Common everyday triggers
- Sitting or standing in one position for a long time
- Unaccustomed exercise, lifting or gardening
- Cool weather
- Low overall activity
Habits that support comfort
- Move regularly. Short breaks every 30–60 minutes help.
- Stretch gently. Especially in the morning.
- Stay active. Walking, swimming and yoga suit many people.
- Massage. A regular massage with a suitable oil can be soothing.
- Keep a healthy weight and sleep well.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have joint pain that is severe or worsening, swelling, redness or warmth around a joint, stiffness lasting a long time each morning, pain after an injury, or pain with fever. These can be signs of a condition that needs proper diagnosis and treatment. Massage oils and wellness routines do not replace medical care.
