Why Regular Massage Can Be Part of a Wellness Routine

Oil massage, or abhyanga, is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic self-care. Here is how to make a simple, safe massage part of your week.

In Ayurveda, oil massage — abhyanga — is one of the most valued daily practices. Today, massage is also widely enjoyed in wellness and spa settings. Many people find it relaxing and soothing, and it can be a calm moment of self-care in a busy day.

What massage can offer

  • A relaxing, soothing experience
  • Comfort for muscles that feel tired after work or activity
  • A moment to slow down and pay attention to your body
  • A caring connection when a family member or caregiver gives the massage

A simple self-massage

  1. Warm a little oil between your palms.
  2. Use long strokes on arms and legs and circular strokes around joints.
  3. Keep pressure comfortable — massage should never hurt.
  4. Take five to fifteen minutes, then bathe or wipe off excess oil.

When to be careful

Avoid massaging broken skin, swollen or very painful areas, or injuries. If you have a medical condition — including circulation problems, recent surgery, or a neurological condition — ask your doctor or physiotherapist first. Massage is a complement to care, not a treatment for disease.
